Magman Stocktake New Features

Stocktake compliance and balancing your magazine is a key regulatory requirement. Magman has always been focused on this through proactive alerting and email notifications.

This has now been improved further by introducing a new stocktake validation workflow. This workflow prevents other transactions occurring if the magazine does not balance and requires approval via designated persons to proceed past an imbalanced magazine.

The updated Magman system ensures seamless regulatory compliance and reduced downtime by enforcing users to complete a stocktake each shift prior to any other magazine transactions, removing any guesswork or administration level controls in the stock validation process and immediately requiring intervention if it does not balance.

The new workflow enforces a stocktake before any other transactions can be done in each magazine Magman automatically validates the stocktake as they are completed, instantly flagging discrepancies and prompting a recount of the items that are incorrect. The nominated mining administrator then can release a one time 4 digit code to unlock the magazine. Digital Terrain and Roobuck collaborate at the device level to improve safety and connectivity to underground personnel

Digital Terrain Founder and CEO Andrew Rouse and Roobuck Director and General Manager Henry Gong are excited to announce they have signed a collaborative partnership which will allow for direct device level technology integration, not just in the cloud.

Digital Terrain is now a reseller for Roobuck technology and hardware and aims to incorporate this into their Simbio stack of Products to add further value to their client base through a number of collaborative initiatives. The first point of integration is with their Simbio tablets and the Roobuck Smart Cordless cap lamp.

The Roobuck Cordless Cap lamp comes equipped with Wi-Fi/BLE/RFID/NFC and an inbuilt IMU. Their latest model is also Intrinsically safe, meaning the technology can be used in underground coal mines. The Simbio solution is already in use in underground coal in addition to their larger presence in underground hardrock.

Device level integration is unique and enables key personnel to understand and make decisions when it matters

Both companies are enabling the devices to communicate with each other. A simple use case is when the Simbio device receives a message and depending on its urgency highlighted, proceeds to flash the cap lamp, alerting the operator there is a message. The flashes range from rapid ones to highlight an immediate response to a casual few flashes to say there is something there to look at when time becomes available. This enables yet another touch point to the workforce to ensure their safety is paramount.

They also have the ability to assist in confirming locations of personnel. For example we can improve the confidence that a person is in a particular area if a number of devices are enabled and assigned to them. Unforeseen events to an operator wearing the cap lamp, which can be identified via a button triggered duress call or automatically recorded via IMU movement detection, could send a message to the tablet to alert others of someone needing to come and check on their welfare.

Explosives in a mine - avoiding costly incidents

Explosives are commonly used in the underground mining environment, however, their handling and usage come with inherent risks. Accidents involving explosives can lead to serious injuries or fatalities, as well as significant damage to equipment and infrastructure.

During waste bogging operations at an Australian mine, a loader operator heard what sounded like a detonation of explosives. Although initial inspections of the muck pile didn't reveal any explosive material, further examination uncovered two pieces of cord-type explosives typically used for perimeter blasting. This explosive contained PETN, known to be sensitive to impact, friction, or heat. Fortunately, there were no injuries resulting from this incident. However, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with misfired explosives, which can lead to fly rock and serious injuries.

In a separate incident, extensive damage occurred underground following a blast in a development heading, affecting ventilation ducting, services, and support mesh. Around 180 meters of drive were impacted, with significant damage to the support mesh near the face. The investigation revealed that excess ANFO, inadvertently initiated during face firing, was dumped onto the face due to time constraints and the charge-up vehicle needing maintenance. Contributing factors included time constraints, pressure to advance the heading, ventilation delays, misjudgments about remaining explosives, and failure to inspect for unconfined explosives.

To prevent similar incidents in the future, it's crucial to adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations, implement a comprehensive blast management plan, conduct regular reviews and audits of blasting procedures, investigate misfires thoroughly, and acknowledge the risks posed by excessive explosives left in the workplace and ensure compliance with regulations for their proper disposal. The easier these are to undertake the more frequency and more accurate these will be.

Problem Statement

The underground mining environment is undoubtedly harsh and expensive to operate. Confined spaces, minimal ventilation and underground vehicle emissions can compromise air quality underground. Underground blasting is an essential part of the mining process but results in an abundance of toxic gases being released into the enclosed environment.

Re-entry into blast fume-affected underground areas is a safety and productivity concern for most mines. Lengthy re-entry times may improve clearance of noxious gases but can result in production delays and decreased overall productivity. Re-entry times into development headings are often standardized based on worst-case scenarios, resulting in unnecessary delays. Fume clearance from blast areas can be mathematically estimated using a number of different methods however a complicating factor of fume clearance is considering the volume, efficiency, and discharge location of fresh air ducts required to clear development blast areas.

The two most dangerous gases in an underground mine are nitrogen oxide, generated from explosive blasting, and carbon monoxide, from trucks and other mining equipment using internal combustion engines. These gases are crucial to monitor to prevent any worker from being in a toxic environment.

Following a blast there is a minimum wait time before re-entry is permitted. This is a time of minimal productivity, and where possible should try to be reduced. When there is no active feedback on live gas readings meaning that workers may be waiting for an unnecessary time, or a worst-case scenario of sending people (re-entry crew) into an unsafe environment.

Blasting with explosives is an essential activity for developing tunnels in most underground hard rock mines, however, the process introduces a number of hazards that must be controlled to ensure a safe work environment. A major consideration is the release and removal of noxious gases from the mine before the re-entry of workers to areas that may be affected by blasting fumes. Traditional methods of estimating blast fume dispersal can provide accurate indications of clearance times if carefully calibrated to mine conditions; however, these tools are rarely used systematically with blasting activities due to the wide range of variations in ventilation and blasting conditions. In addition, the traditional calculation methods provide a limited platform for calculating mine-wide fume dispersal, where mixing of airflows and dilution limit the use of fume concentration calculations. Risks associated with underground gas levels are:

Placing re-entry crews at risk if the gases are still unsafe following a blast.

Exposure to bogging crews when they are bogging (releasing pockets of gas).

Exposure to diesel particulates through inadequately ventilated environments and diesel equipment operated within confined environments.

Underground safety, productivity and profitability

In the world of underground mining, inaccessible areas such as stopes and ore passes are crucial areas that directly determine the shift and monthly productivity. Cavity Monitoring Systems (CMS) provide limited visibility into these dangerous areas but are constrained by access. Personnel changes mean constant re-training
Operators only gain limited and site-specific experience. This makes them unprepared for difficult scenarios that might develop. Infrequent use almost always results in loss and damage of expensive equipment
Collecting the data is only half the job. Processing the data collected requires specialist skillsets. Processing and interpreting collected data is extremely heavy on compute and is very data intensive because of the sheer size of datasets.
Processing turnaround is crucial. Operators often do not have sufficient time to learn and experiment with processing software, techniques and settings for optimal results – all with time sensitivity to inform operational decisions.
Historical data collected over time is lost or not managed correctly
Specialist shaft, lighting and other sensor attachments are not easily available but are critical for success

The industry is a bustling sector of ideas, products, services that are intended to help make the most of the mining value chain. It's often tempting for organisations that sell into this sector to focus on the allure of features. Our Chief Operating Officer – Ian Jansen encouraged our team to think about the problems we solve for our customers and to retain the essence of why people seek out our Magman products in the first place. Word of mouth has been a wonderful tool that has allowed us to acquire over 70 mine sites globally but is only one thread of challenges, desires, and aspirations of our customers.

Make it easy : We make it easy to replace paper record keeping in a magazine with legislatively compliant, certified, intrinsically safe tablets and specialist software. Easier said than done because we’ve seen many complex problems to the simple problem of replacing paper records.

Reduce Errors : We reduce the number of errors, with no need to transcribe into error prone spreadsheets with formulas. It’s all done for you. Automatic notification and escalation of errors. The cost of shutting down the operation to resolve an error is enormous. Correcting typos on the go is handy and helps this too.

Improve Accuracy : Large, simplified buttons backed by best practice user processes helps with the repetitive nature of data capture for explosives movement

Efficient blast designs or stope firings : Prevents busy operators from needing to fill out entire takes. This improves speed and efficiency akin to a recipe process.

Digital Terrain acquires Magman

Digital Terrain is pleased to announce we have completed the acquisition of Magman Mining Software (Magman) from the founding shareholders.

Magman is a widely accepted standard across the industry for paperless explosives magazine management, among other applications. The Magman system provides statutory managers with the platform and tools to ensure their explosive magazines are compliant with the regulators requirements. The specialised Magman tablets are rugged and intrinsically safe and purpose built to eliminate all radio frequency emissions.

"The acquisition of Magman into the Digital Terrain family of products and services means we can seamlessly integrate the solutions to provide the most efficient and complementary process for our end users. We are inheriting a great company with great people which provides greater scale, opportunities for collaboration, and product improvement to benefit both businesses" Andrew Rouse, CEO of Digital Terrain.

Mr Rouse explained that acquiring Magman and enhancing the existing Simbio solution suite will allow customers to leverage the benefits from both systems while minimising duplication. “We will be enriching each system with additional data to provide improved insights into your mine's data and resulting performance, as well as simplifying the end user experience,” he said.

“Following on from the Magman acquisition and other imminent initiatives we will see our numbers grow from a small team of at the start of July 2022 to now approaching 20 within the coming months. “It is great to see our business growing in strength and increasing scale and capability. The core teams within Digital Terrain and Magman are mining personnel who have developed software skills, making them well aware of the challenges our customers deal with on-site and how to help them.”

Magman will continue to operate as a separate business with the same team providing the same high standards of customer service. Digital Terrain will provide management and support services (HR, IT, Commercial, accounts, etc) and strategic direction to Magman, enabling their team to focus on existing and new customers. Both product teams will start to work together and share ideas on product enhancement, development techniques and integration opportunities.
